McGinley was born in Newport Beach, California. He has a sister named Sue and another by the name of Patti. He is married to Gigi Rice and they have two children. He took Brooke Shields to her prom when she was 16 years old. He attended the University of Southern California where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and captain of the water polo team.[1]
Ted graduated Newport Harbor High School in 1976 and played water polo. Ted was slated to play on the US Olympic water polo team[citation needed].
[edit] Career
McGinley first found fame in comedy series Happy Days as Roger Phillips (nephew of the Cunninghams), a role he played from 1980 until 1984. He made his film debut in the Revenge of the Nerds series where he played Stanley Gable, the head of the jock-run Alpha Beta fraternity and the primary antagonist of the Lambda Lambda Lambda nerd fraternity. He then went into the role of Jefferson D'Arcy on Married... with Children from 1991 to 1997. From 2003 until 2006, he played Charley Shanowski on Hope & Faith .
McGinley has been called the patron saint of "jumping the shark" by jumptheshark.com founder Jon Hein.[2] This is a reference to the popular and enduring shows which have featured him in their declining years. Such shows include Happy Days, The Love Boat, and Dynasty. Hein writes that this is not a comment "on Ted's fine acting skills" and that "he has a great sense of humor about it, too".[3] McGinley was also a replacement character on Married... with Children. In this series his tenure was ultimately much longer than that of his predecessor, David Garrison. McGinley himself spoofed the fact by momentarily breaking the fourth wall on one Married with Children episode where he is taking pictures for Al and asks "Another picture, captain? I mean, Fonzie? ....Al?"
