[edit] Hyoi Gattai
Hyoi Gattai (Integration in English manga, Spirit Unity in the dub) is the fundamental technique for being a shaman. The shaman calls forth the spirit into Spirit Ball (Hitodama) mode, and shoves the ball into their stomach. The shaman can then use the spirit's knowledge and fighting techniques, while retaining control of their body, unlike possession. The strongest form of this technique is Hyoi 100%, where the spirit's and shaman's wills are fused into one, so movements are much stronger and smoother.
[edit] Usage
In the beginning of the series, before learning oversoul, Yoh and Amidamaru use this technique, with Yoh wielding a variety of objects; a steel pipe, a bokuto, and Amidamaru's sword Harusame. However, only swords allow Yoh to utilize Amidamaru's techniques. In the manga, he also used the spirits of dead students to help him in school (presumably with this technique), and at one point combined with a dead boxing champion, Kenji Gushi, to help his pupil find the right path. Ren fuses with Bason and wields a kwan dao (Chinese halberd). All shamans use this technique if they have not mastered the oversoul, but Yoh, Horohoro, and Ren are the only ones shown using Hyoi Gattai.

[edit] Double Medium
Double Medium is a technique that is required of a shaman if, after merging with his guardian spirit, the flow of energy he is trying to externalize is too great. He will lose control over his Furyoku ("furyoku" is a shaman's energy, which he uses to form Oversoul and the giant form), which will start to burn very fast. He must then use another weapon, and, in the same way that the Shaman's soul and that of his Guardian Spirit are joint, combine the mediums in one large weapon. Thus, the Shaman can fully tap into his Furyoku potential, and deal much more damage over a bigger radius.
This technique, as can be imagined, can and did bring down great foes in the Shaman Fight. However, it is not by any means the greatest and most powerful technique known to Shamankind. Indeed it was improved through Mikihisa Asakura's Spirit Reduction (unofficial name) technique, and bested through The Great Spirit's powers.
[edit] Usage
In the anime, Yoh Asakura is the only one who achieves a "double medium". He invokes his guardian ghost, Amidamaru, into his katana (Harusame), and then into the Antiquity (the Futsu no Mitama no Tsurugi). This causes him to have a large, glowing, blue katana with a shielded hilt in the colour of Amidamaru's armour, slightly similar to his Over Soul form. He managed to learn this technique himself, unlike the Over Soul and the Giant form which he learnt respectively from Silva and the Chou Senji Ryakketsu (the Great Book of Shaman written by the original Hao Asakura), brought to Yoh by Anna.
[edit] Furyoku Nullification
This technique is rarely seen in the manga, only three people has been shown to use it. Those being Anna, Yoh Asakura, and Hao Asakura. From what has been seen, the user creates a field of Furyoku or some hidden force to completely negate any Furyoku based attack. Hao, mastered this technique completely, but Yoh is now grasping the technique.
[edit] Spirit Reduction
The technique was never named save by Mikihisa's technique, Spirit Reduction is a fan-term.
When they entered the Shaman fight, Yoh and his friends were all of a quite high power level : they were all able to use Giant Over Soul and in Yoh's case, Double Medium. However, they were still to the eyes of all no match against Hao Asakura, whose power was stronger than it ever was. It was these circumstances that brought Mikihisa Asakura, Yoh's father, to try to teach them how to be stronger. He showed them how his own very small spirits could easily disrupt their gigantic forms of Giant Over Soul, and made them meditate thereupon.
Only Yoh and Ren will benefit from this teaching, effectively reducing the size of their spiritual weapons without changing the amount of Furyoku externalized (for such is the secret of Spirit Reduction), thus bringing more power to their strikes.
However, Hao showed that he was also a master of this technique, as shown in the utter defeat of Yoh as he tried to stop Hao in a one on one fight.
They will abandon this technique completely during the final fight against Hao Asakura, Yoh found the larger sword more effective against Hao Asakura and Ren managed to merge his two Giant Over Soul forms.

[edit] Koubaku Over Soul (manga only)
This technique also known as armor style oversoul is mastered by all of Yoh's friends by the end of the manga. Specially the Elemental Warriors (Yoh Asakura, Tao Ren, Horo Horo, Chocolove (Joco) and Lyserg Diethel) and including Hao Asakura respectively. The shape and power of the Koubaku Over Soul is directly related both to the shaman's spiritual power and feelings. Hao says that this is the ultimate kind of oversoul as it is both offensive and defensive at the same time, plus it doesn't consume too much furyokou. It can be described as a really dense oversoul making its power way above that of a normal oversoul.
[edit] Usage
The Koubaku Over Soul allows the shaman to use his Furyoku to its highest potential. It can be achieved by raising the shaman's Furyoku to the top and tuning one's soul and feelings, and some shamans are able to control two spirits at the same time (Chocolove needs the help of both Mic Jaguar and Pascal Avaf, and Lyserg needs that of both Morphin and Zeruel). While using a Koubaku Over Soul, all of the shamans' techniques are more effective, and they usually get to develop a new ultimate technique.
