Teaching Hospital Kandy, in Kandy, is the second largest General Hospital in Sri Lanka. Bed strength of the hospital in the year 2007 was 2164. Teaching Hospital Kandy with strong links to the University of Peradeniya conducts undergraduate training programmes for the university students studying Medicine and Dental sciences. Post Graduate Institute of Medicine which is a National Institute attached to the University of Colombo appoints post-graduate trainees and senior registrars to this hospital on a regular basis as this is one of the oldest Hospitals which provides the entire range of medical and surgical specialties under the administration of a single institution. Kandy Hospital is the second largest medical institution in the Island established and administered under the purview of the Ministry of Health Care and Nutrition (http://www.health.gov.lk/), which is a key Government Hospital maintained by the Sri Lankan Government for the people living in the Central Province.
General Hospital Kandy is providing specialized health care services to the adjoining provinces which include North Central Province, Uva Province, Eastern Province, Sabaragamuwa Province and the Wayamba Province as well, as there are no highly specialized units for some of these remote areas.
Kandy hospital is situated closer to the City center along the Gopallawa Mawatha from one side and along the Hanthana (Hospital Road) from the other side. This is one of the largest building complexes situated in the historic city of Kandy.
The medical and surgical specialties covered in this hospital include Cardiothoracic surgery, Renal Transplant Units, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Rheumatology, Physiotherapy, Orthopedic surgery, Gastroenterology, ENT, Dental Surgery, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, STD, Radiology, Pathology, Laboratory services, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics Paediatric surgery, Psychiatry, General Medicine, General Surgery, Intensive care, Chest Medicine, Cardiology, Plastic surgery , Haematology, Oncology, Ontological surgery, Urology, Nursing school, Judicial Medicine, Postgraduate Center, Emergency Treatment Unit, Nephrology, Endocrinology and Out patient Departments covering almost all medical and surgical specialities under a single Institution.
Office facilities for the Kandy society of Medicine which conducts many academic and research activities is also situated within the Hospital complex.
