[edit] Appearance

UtherSRG, you've reverted several people now claiming "We've settled on using *this* version. Please don't toccolourize us.", but I can't find any comments of anyone supporting that view. ed g2stalk 01:43, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

How about all of the work that's gone into crafting the taxoboxes, the dialogue of which is spread out throughout the talk for WP:TOL and some of its subpages, including where you tried to sneak in the original change when I thought you were only transforming it from HTML-based to wikicode-based. Furthermore, how about trying to engage in dialogue on the talk for WP:TOL before making the change and being fully clear on what you are doing? Ed, you are not and have not been a part of the crafting of the taxoboxes. I again ask you to take the matter up on the project's talk. Of course, you already know I will fight this tooth and nail, as I am adamantly opposed to the formatting changes you keep trying to make. - UtherSRG (talk) 09:07, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

Ed: This is a template that appears on more than 11,000 pages. Many editors have put a lot of work into it, and it reached its present form after a great deal of discussion (see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tree of Life/Archives). So changes made without discussion, by editors who haven't paid their dues (so to speak), are not going to be looked at favourably. Of course the appearance can be improved, but what you need to do is to present a case at WT:TOL: make a mockup of how you think it should look and persuade people that your version is better. Edit warring on the template pages won't help. Gdr 13:32:02, 2005-08-13 (UTC)

I can't find the part of the discussion where you decided to deviate from the default skin. ed g2stalk 02:17, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
Stop being coy, ed. You know full well the "default" developped after the taxobox, that the taxobox underwent several changes before the "default" skin was put into place. You want a change, you need to work for it. - UtherSRG (talk) 03:05, August 15, 2005 (UTC)
That change has already been established by the presence of such format is several, several, SEVERAL other templates. Now all you have to do is put in the table heading. That's what the community has achieved through SEVERAL discussions is NUMEROUS pages. You will have to accept it. Otherwise you are going against what is already a consensus in Wikipedia. And we fought REALLY HARD for that wide consensus. So please don't be stubborn. —Cantus 06:14, August 29, 2005 (UTC)
I've no idea what "toccolourize", or "subst:prettyinfobox", mean, or how all these things work. But what I do know is that the format that's being pushed on here is hideous, with a dreadful white margin at the top and sides of the pic that needs to be got rid of. And text that is too small. If you want us to have these formats, then redesign them to get rid of those faults, and then we'll be happy to reconsider taking them on board - MPF 08:55, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
Agreed. In addition please do not push this on us without discussion. I've made several offers to ed and now to you, to come to WP:TOL or wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life/Taxobox Usage to discuss the changes before incorporating them. WP:TOL editors have, over several years crafted what we have today. Your discussions outside of our forum mean nothing to us. - UtherSRG (talk) 11:15, August 29, 2005 (UTC)

I've applied class="infobox borderless" to the box, with great results. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 01:44, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

I've reverted, as it doesn't quite seem to work properly, creating extra space around images. Also, it does change the appearance and while I personally don't care, a lot of people seem to. This affects enough pages that it would be best to discuss before making changes, which nobody has done so far. Josh

If you wanna change the style back, that's fine, but don't do a blanket revert of the other improvements. Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 10:35, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
If you want these supposed "other improvements", please say what they are, why they are improvements, and how they can be incorporated without wrecking the current appearance! - MPF 10:41, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Link to the WikiProject

The question mark should be changed to the letter i, as this has also been done in the taxobox. --Eleassar my talk 17:26, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Redundant template

I've looked at many of the hundred-ish pages linking to this template and cannot find one that couldn't be upgraded to taxobox. Therefore according to WP:CFORK, this page appears redundant, and has not kept pace with advancements in Template:Taxobox. I propose the following to be added to the beginning of the template, to encourage editors to replace it; please let me know if this is not an appropriate course to take. Verisimilus T 18:03, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

<div class="messagebox cleanup metadata plainlinks">
width=60px|
This article uses a depreciated template.<br />Please help improve this article by updating the taxobox.
}</div><includeonly></includeonly>

editprotected

In the absence of objection, please insert the above code at the beginning of this template. As it's used on so few articles, could its editprotected status be reconsidered? Verisimilus T 15:00, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

N Not done Automatically putting a cleanup tag on articles via an unrelated template is normally a bad idea (for one thing, it would be quite likely to break formatting, and for another, there would be no obvious way for editors on the articles to remove the message, and besides the tagging wouldn't show up on watchlists). Besides, this template isn't marked as being deprecated at the moment. I suggest a better way to accomplish what you want would be to open a WP:TFD on this template, requesting its deprecation and replacement; then the TfD tag would appear in the relevant articles informing editors there of what was going on. --ais523 16:01, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. I've listed it in TFD; the notification has been placed on the talk page as the template is editprotected. Verisimilus T 15:07, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

editprotected No objection to template deletion was raised in the TFD; I've tested my amendments on a few pages and it doesn't seem to cause any formatting/layout problems, even where this looked likely. It's:

 • Useful to have it there, otherwise the old template will never disappear;
 • Not causing any problems. The amended wording in the div should make it more than clear how to remove the box.

Verisimilus T 08:28, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

No. File a bot request and someone should be able to knock this out in a couple hours. This isn't a reader issue. Cheers. --MZMcBride 17:36, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Actually, it would probably take someone a couple of minutes. There are less than 250 transclusions of this template. --MZMcBride 17:48, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nominated for deletion again

I nominated this template for deletion again. I fixed all the items listed on the 'Redundant Taxobox' page. It should be safe to delete this template now. —Noah 05:31, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
