Boston has greater land area than Taunton (232 sq km vs 124), so I removed the claim that Taunton was the largest city in MA. This is true even if you only include dry land (125 vs 121) MarcusGraly 21:53, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Your are correct...and dry land is the only portion considered "land area". The city, as well as the media, refer to Taunton as largest city based on land mass. 139.84.121.26 19:18, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

This is still incorrect; according to Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development (see the Massachusetts state web site), Boston is 89.63 square miles overall and 48.32 square miles of land area. Taunton is 47.97 square miles overall and 46.62 square miles of land area. Not that it matters, given the facts, but being a southern Bristol County resident, I have never heard Taunton referred to as "the largest city." I have fixed it to reflect this. Boston is 46 mi^2 and Taunton 48 mi^2. Why argue?

Article cleanup needed== Lots of list and images, but the format is messy and incorrect for a city article. Also, several of the images are copyrighted, which should be kept to a minimum. Also, I would suggest that the images should be placed in Wikimedia Commons (for GFDL-licensed).

Plymouth is 134.0 square miles, much bigger than Taunton. However, Plymouth is classified as a town, not a city.

The huge amount of external links within the main article is also worrisome and should be kept to a minimum. I am unsure why many such links exist in the first place. Pentawing 01:30, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

  • As of November 20, 2005, I believe that the article is cleaned up. Hence, I removed the cleanup tag. Pentawing 00:16, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

I have re-added the clean-up tag. This article has too many lists, most of which are external links. Also why doesn't this article use the City infobox? And what is the purpose of the extensive gallery? Joelito 13:02, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Most of the images were copyrighted but had incorrect PD or GFDL tags on them. I deleted them as copyvios. —Angr 07:45, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
I am working on cleaning up this article. I am not sure of what to do with the so-called "Notable firsts" section, as none of the information is considered verified. For now, I will leave it in. ToddC4176 15:42, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
I put the "unverified" tags up because I went to the site and didn't immediately find the information claimed. In the interests of verifiability, sources cited should be the exact page the information is found on, not the overall site. If I told you the Sears Tower was the tallest building in the United States, telling me the information is somewhere on emporis.com wouldn't be enough info. Pointing me to the Sears Tower, Chicago on Emporis.com page would be.--Loodog 16:33, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Also, agree with Pentawing. Format should be consistent with wikiProject Cities guidelines.--Loodog 16:35, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Greater Taunton Area

The category "Greater Taunton Area" appears to be redundant with cat:Taunton and cat:Bristol County. Anyone have any strong feelings for/against deletion? Paul 15:49, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Largest city in area

Apparently someone found a source saying that Taunton is the largest city by area in the state. This is flagrantly wrong. Compare statistics for area against Boston!--Loodog 20:47, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Seal of Taunton.png

Image:Seal of Taunton.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
