The Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music forms part of the faculty of Arts at the University of Tasmania. It is a music training institution with courses and specializations in Classical Music, Contemporary Music (Jazz and Rock), Music Education, Music Technology, Music Composition and Musical Theatre.

The school offers a range of undergraduate degrees and postgraduate degrees including the MMus (research) and PhD. The school has an active performance program through its various ensembles including the ARIA award nominated Southern Gospel Choir, the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, Conservatorium Chamber Soloists, The Conservatorium Big Band, The Conservatorium Concert Choir and our resident ensemble iCon.

The school maintains an increasing number of seasonal short-course schools including the Easter Jazz School, the Summer Rock School, the Winter String School, the Winter Voice School and the acclaimed Australian International Summer Orchestral Institute. The school also offers a very successful and robust community based program for pre-tertiary music students in The Young Conservatorium. The Conservatorium acts to administer the AMEB in Tasmania and has very close and meaningful links with local educational and performance institutions including the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, IHOS Opera and ExitLeft Theatre.

[edit] Origins of the Conservatorium

[edit] Expansion and reforms

Since 2000, the Conservatorium has progressively responded to community demands for comprehensiveness and quality in its educational programs. This has seen the creation of new areas of study such as Musical Theatre, Rock Studies and Time-based Multimedia that now sit beside its established programs in Classical Music, Jazz and Music Education.

As the school grows, its ability to send strong messages to an ever-broader base of community groups intensifies. With outreach through almost every style of music the school increasingly commands the respect and ‘buy-in’ from a larger and more diverse community. Currently the UTAS Conservatorium is the only Conservatorium in the country to offer such a diversity and depth of study in music. This has resulted in a rapidly growing student body and an increased focus on meeting the needs of students through an increased variety of course delivery modes such as summer and winter schools taught in intensive blocks as well as moving course offerings to after school hours and evenings.
