Tasmania University Union

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tasmania University Union Inc (TUU) is the students' union that represents tertiary students attending the southern campuses of the University of Tasmania. It celebrated its centenary in 1999. It is larger than the Student Association which is the organisation that represents students at the northern campuses of the University of Tasmania based in Launceston. The TUU holds annual elections from which members are elected to positions within the Union. The TUU is affiliated with the National Union of Students (NUS) and with the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations.

The TUU was heavily involved in the successful campaign to defeat Commonwealth Voluntary Student Unionism proposals in 1999. However, VSU legislation was later passed by the Australian Parliament in 2005, putting the future of the TUU in question. While it continues to operate as it has in the past, discussions with the university may change it significantly.

The TUU is jointly governed by a Student Representative Council and a Board of Management.

The TUU has over 30 affiliated sports clubs and over 80 affiliated non-sporting societies. Despite the introduction of voluntary student unionism resulting in major cuts to direct funding available to these groups, the TUU continues to provide asset and accident insurance, assistance by means of an employed Sports and Societies Officer and convenes monthly Sports Councils and Societies Councils, chaired by the TUU Sports and Societies Councils President. The Councils President is the common president of both councils and workes with an Executive Committee that the Councils elect within their own number.
