Tarn-Vedra is a fictional planet in the Andromeda universe.
The planet's inhabitants, the Vedrans, founded the Systems Commonwealth as the Vedran Empire. They were the most powerful, intelligent and influential species in the universe. They discovered slipstream, and were starfaring while humans were building Stonehenge. They evolved from aggressive, war-like interstellar conquerors to a benevolent, peaceful and highly intellectual people.
Vedrans are a matriarchal and nearly dimorphic alien species, with some females tending to be slightly smarter and less physically aggressive than their male counterparts. Vedran males still possess superhuman levels of intelligence unrivaled by members of any species except the Perseids. A Vedran family usually has a female and several males, the Alpha Male getting to mate with the lone female. Among the Vedrans, males are usually much stronger, faster and more physically resilient than females. They also outnumber females by about six to one. The family is organized by herd, tribe and then by nation.
A male Vedran's loyalty is to his mother's herd then that of his mates. All Vedrans, male and female, are loyal to the Empress, who is also the titular head of the Systems Commonwealth.
The only Vedran shown on Andromeda looks almost like a Centaur from Greek mythology, but with blue skin and her four legs spaced closer together than those of a true Centaur. She appears to have a humanoid body, but with a pelvis that is spaced for four legs. According to the Andromeda Web page, their lower bodies as well as their heads are covered with feathers. The male Vedrans, decidedly larger and stronger than the females, apparently have brightly colored feathers which cover their heads and spines.
After the start of Andromeda, the planet Tarn-Vedra is cut off from the galaxy. The planet Tarn-Vedra had been attacked by the Nietzschean Prides during the Systems Commonwealth civil war.
In Season 5, it is later revealed that the Vedrans built the Seefra System and its twin suns out of what was originally the Tarn-Vedra system. They also possibly evolved into Paradines, highly intelligent and adaptable bipedal humanoid beings who can interbreed with ordinary humans.
In the last episode of season 5, it is also revealed that the Vedrans not only built the Methus Suns to allow the system to survive, but to stop the Abyss because the ancient Vedrans knew of the Abyss. They knew it was a threat to all sentient life in the cosmos. Tarn-Vedra was then reunited with the Known Worlds.
