Tarialan, Khövsgöl

Tarialan (Mongolian: Тариалан) is a sum of Khövsgöl aimag. The area is 3,140 km², of which 1,580 km² are pasture and 210 km² are farmland. In 2000, Tarialan had a population of 6,070 people. The sum center, officially named Badrakh (Mongolian: Бадрах), is located 160 km east of Mörön and 521 km from Ulaanbaatar.

The Tarialian sum was founded, together with the whole Khövsgöl aimag, in 1931. In 1933, it had 3,000 inhabitants in 908 households, and about 50,000 heads of livestock. In 1937, it became seat of a hay production base, which was expanded to a tractor base in 1938. The base became a state farm in 1943.

In 2004, there were about 110,000 heads of livestock, among them 47,000 goats, 43,000 sheep, 13,000 cattle and yaks, 9,600 horses and 21 camels.[1]

The place where Baron Ungern was captured in August 1921 is today on the border between Tarialan and Teshig sum of Bulgan aimag.
