Tarapith

Tarapith is a small town near Rampurhat in Birbhum district of West Bengal in India. It features a Hindu temple that attracts tourists. The distance from Rampurhat is approximately 6 kilometers.

[edit] General Info about reaching Tarapith

Tarapith can be easily reached by Rail and Road. Rampurhat is 219 km by railways from Kolkata. For reaching by railway, catch a train from Howrah (HWH) or Sealdah (SDAH) and get down at Rampurhat (RPH). You can book your train tickets from www.irctc.co.in, there is facility of buying E-Ticket from here. To reach Tarapith from Rampurhat station it is preferable to catch an auto rickshaw. Otherwise if you want come by road, go to Esplanade/Dharamtalla bus stand and catch a bus to Tarapith directly. It is preferable to catch the bus early in the morning so that by evening you can reach Tarapith.

The nearest airport is Kolkata. From airport you can take a taxi/cab to Howrah, Sealdah station or Esplanade bus stand.

Tarapith is situated near Dwaraka river. The idol is covered in a golden mask all the time, during night you can see the actual idol. Photography is strictly not allowed here. So please remember to shut off your camera before entering the temple. Also you do not need the services of Panda in this temple, if you want you can buy anything from the numerous shops around the temple and stand in the line for darshan. It is one of the peaceful and clean temples. You can also visit Bamdev Shangha Ashram just a few yards away from main temple of Maa Tara .

Tarapith is famous for Maa Tara and also famous for the great saint Bamakhayapa. Here in Tarapith burning ground (situated near Temple) Bamakhyapa sat in meditation. He on enlightenment saw Maa Tara.
