[edit] Shipping and Handling

I recently came across an article in the Swedish Wikipedia about bergsvikt, an obsolete "gross" weight system dating from the 16th century in which an additional 1/10th of the weight of the goods to be shipped was added to cover the transportation costs and another 1/200th for lading(?) loses. Was this actually shipping and handling? What were the rates for these services in these times? Is the similarity to "tare and tret" more than just a coincidence?

The system was intended for products to be exported so it is possible that tare had its origin as a tariff or an excise tax which would be more consistent with a fixed rate. This dates from the start of the merchantile system --Jbergquist (talk) 03:50, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
