TARTA (Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority) is a bus company that has been transporting people in the Toledo area of Ohio since 1971. TARTA has over 40 routes in and around the Toledo metropolitan area serving nine communities and carries almost 5 million passengers each year. Every TARTA bus is wheelchair-accessible, uses biodiesel fuel, and equipped with bicycle racks.[1] The company also has special buses designed especially for handicapped riders called TARPS (Toledo Area Regional Paratransit Service), which acts along the lines of the Americans with Disabilities Act.[2]

[edit] Routes

The buses have routes in Toledo and its suburbs, including Maumee, Ottawa Hills, Perrysburg, Rossford, Spencer Township, Sylvania, Sylvania Township, and Waterville. This includes service to Fifth Third Field for all Toledo Mud Hens home baseball games, as well as throughout Lourdes College, Owens Community College, and the University of Toledo. Call-A-Ride service is available in each of these locations.[1]

[edit] Biodiesel study

TARTA is currently taking part in a study looking at the impact of using a mixture of biodiesel fuels and petroleum-based diesel fuel.[3] After congresswoman Marcy Kaptur provided the company with a $1.5 million grant, the study began in 2007. The University of Toledo's Intermodal Transportation Institute is conducting the study using both ULSD fuel and a specific mixture composed mostly of ULSD fuel with 20% B20. Passenger air quality, operating costs, emissions, and both engine performance and wear are being studied.[4]
