TAWIRI is a public institution that was established under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism in 1980 with the mandate to carry out and co-ordinate wildlife research in the United Republic of Tanzania. TAWIRI is the CITES Scientific Authority in Tanzania. The headquarters of TAWIRI is at Njiro in Arusha, Tanzania.The Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) is headquartered in Arusha, Tanzania and has four research stations in other parts of the country.
TAWIRI is responsible for supervising all wildlife research related activities in Tanzania. The mission is to:
- Carry out research on various aspects of wildlife and biodiversity in general.
- Co-ordinate and supervise all wildlife research in the country.
- Advise the Government and wildlife management authorities on sustainable conservation of wildlife resources.
- Facilitate the involvement of Tanzanians in wildlife research including training.
TAWIRI works closely with Tanzania National Parks and the Division of Wildlife.
