Tantum is one of the southernmost settlement in all of Cape Verde. The area around Tantum are surrounded by mountains to the east and west and farmlands are in the valley areas with a small field. The settlement is linked with a poor dirt linking to nearby Campo Baixo as well as Nova Sintra and the rest of the island. A small dry stream flows near Campo Baixo. The living standards are one of the lowest in Cape Verde and income is nearly at the lowest range, one time, there were no money until the late-20th century. Residents lives in small mud and brick made houses. The village has low importance. The entire population are farmers and are based in agriculture where banana plantations, pineapple and other crops are common. However, much of the needy materials comes from the island capital and the diaspora. But for other needs, electricity, communications and appliances are not available in the area as well as phone lines in which the nearest payphone or cardphone is in Nova Sintra do Monte.
