Tanglin Secondary School was officially opened on 16th October 1964 by Mr Ong Pang Boon, Minister of Education and MLA for Telok Ayer.

Tanglin Secondary School was previously known as Tanglin Technical School also known as the 'RI of the West' (RI stands for Raffles Institution). Tanglin was the first Technical School to introduce Fencing as an ECA in 1964. In 1966, female students were enrolled. In 1968. The school took its intake of chinese medium pre-university classes. By 1969, TISTS re-named itself as TANGLIN TECHNICAL SECONDARY SCHOOL.

It was in located in Commonwealth until 1993 it moved to its new campus at West Coast. In the same year Tanglin Technical School was renamed Tanglin Secondary School.

In 2004, Tanglin had its first Musical Production by our very own Tanglinians entitled 'Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat' together with its 40th anniversary celebrations in School. In November, the show was opened to the public at the Singapore Polytechnic Convention Centre.

In 2004, Tanglin introduced the Dance Programme for the Lower Secondary Boys and Girls to expose the students to the Arts. They were taught Ballet, Jazz and Hip Hop from the programme. Students were also given the chance to perform on stage to showcase their dance during the annual ACES Day. And through this Dance Programme, young talents were found and they formed a dance team and trained for competitions.

In 2006, Tanglin had its first Drama presentation at its Annual Arts @ Tanglin in Singapore Polytechnic Convention Centre. It is titled 'An Enemy of the people'. One of the Literature book for 2006 & 2007 GCE 'O' level Examinations.

In 2008, Tanglin had its second Musical Production of a famous Broadway show by the talented students 'A Chorus Line'. 'A Chorus Line' is famous and was once awarded the longest-running musical. The performance was successful. It was held at the University Cultural Centre(UCC), National University of Singapore(NUS) in February for the public.

In July 2008, Tanglin will be having its 3rd Arts @ Tanglin in Tanglin Secondary School Campus.
