Tanah Abang

Tanah Abang is a subdistrict of Central Jakarta, Indonesia.

The subdistrict is divided into 7 administrative villages (kelurahan): Bendungan Hilir, Karet Tengsin, Kebon Melati, Kebon Kacang, Kampung Bali, Petamburan, and Gelora.

The subdistrict hosts the biggest textile market in Southeast Asia. The market has been known to exist since 1735. A small part of the market was destroyed by the fire in February 2003. The cause of fire remains as a controversial issue . Stamford Raffles' first wife Olivia Raffles is buried in a cemetery here. She died of malaria in Bogor in 1814, aged 43 years. At the time Stamford Raffles was the Governor while the English were in control in the region.
