Tamoil is a trading name of the Oilinvest B.V. Group, an oil company based in the Netherlands and set up by the Libyan state-owned National Oil Corporation in 1988. Tamoil took its name from the Lebanese-American businessman Roger Tamraz, whose privately-owned Oil Capital Ltd-Inc. (OCL) was first established in 1965. When OCL made its first major downstream investment by acquiring the Amoco service station and oil refining business in Italy in 1983, the Tamoil name was introduced[1]. Tamoil soon followed by expansion into Switzerland (by acquiring Gatoil) and other European countries, including the Netherlands and Germany, where it operates mainly under the HEM brand. The Libyans took a controlling interest in Tamoil around 1988, but the exact dates and details of this transaction are not in the public domain[2].

Oilinvest's activities under the Tamoil brand, mainly in Europe and Africa, include the supply, trading and refinement of crude oil and the sale of refined oil products. In 2004 Tamoil operated almost 3000 petrol stations in Europe and over 150 in Africa. [3] In 2006 it extended its African interests by buying Mobil's network in Cameroon, the Ivory Coast, Gabon and on the Isle of Réunion and introduced a new retail branding - Oilibya, to reflect its ownership and Libya's status as a major African oil producer[4].

Tamoil is the shirt sponsor of Italian football (soccer) club Juventus. Under the current sponsorship agreement, covering the period from July 2005 to June 2010, the Tamoil logo appears on Juventus players' shirts in all competitions, replacing a previous deal which covered only European and domestic cups. It is the most expensive shirt sponsorship agreement in European football, costing Tamoil €110 million. There is an option to extend the deal for a further five years for an additional €130 million.
