Tamil Virtual University

The Government of Tamil Nadu has established the Tamil Virtual University on 17 February 2001 as a Society, a unique and first of its kind in India, for providing internet based educational resources and opportunities for the Tamil diaspora as well as for others interested in learning the Tamil language and acquiring knowledge of the history, art, literature and culture of the Tamils.
The Tamil Virtual University offers Certificate Courses in three levels (Basic, Intermediate and Advance) and B.A. Programme in Tamil. The post graduate Programme M.A. (Tamil) has been approved by Tamil University, Tanjore.
The present Chairman of this University is Badma Bushan. Prof. V. C. Kulandaisamy.

"The Tamil Virtual University aims at providing Internet based resources and opportunities for the Tamil Communities living in different parts of the globe as well as others interested in learning Tamil and acquiring knowledge of the history, art, literature and culture of the Tamils".

Following is the mision of Tamil Virtual University, reference [2]
- To develop and deliver Internet based learning material in Tamil language, literature and culture to global Tamil Communities and others interested.
- To develop and deliver customised programmes to meet the cultural needs of the Tamil Communities in different parts of the world and help them retain contact with their heritage.
- To initiate and continue necessary measures to co-ordinate and pool together knowledge resources, developed in Tamil in different parts of the world, for wider dissemination.
- To offer academic programmes in Tamil Language, literature and culture for audit or credit and to award appropriate Certificate/Diploma/Degree through Tamil University, Thanjavur on completion of prescribed requirements.

The Digital Library of TVU is developed for the benefit of the students of TVU and for the Tamils living abroad. It includes Literature, Glossaries and Dictionaries. This section accommodates the entire gamut of literature starting from Sangam Era to the present day, with the following features:
- Classified sections of Books.
- Ancient and Medieval Literature are given along with their commentaries.
- Romanized versions of Tolkappiyam, Patthuppaattu and Ettutthogai.
The distinct advantage of this digital library is its elaborate subject-indexing and search facilities.
