Talk:Tamil place names in Malaysia

[edit] the origin of the word pattani is not tamil

Pattani is the Thai corruption of the word "patani". It means "this beach" in southern thailand language, which refer to the kingdom in southern coast of thailand. Originally, the province called themselve as "patani", but then officially changed to "pattani" as one thai government attempt to "siamize" southern thailand. The word pattani itself has no particular meaning in the official thai language accept the place's name. It is merely a coincidence that the Siamese version of the word patani have the same spelling from a word in tamil language. Therefore it will be deleted.
