  • Act on Conversion of Sanitary Area Status to Municipality, B.E. 2542 (1999) [1]
  • Local Administration Act, B.E. 2457 (1914) [2]

Sadly the link to the english versions does not work.

The following should be incorporated into the article once it gets sorted out:

  • According to [3] tesaban and sukhapiban are converted to standard tambon with the 1997 constitution.
  • According to [4] there are three types of tambon
    • Tambon municipality (Township): elevated to this status if have more than 7,000 citizen, population density 1,500 per km² or higher, high enough income and consent of population
    • Mueang Municipality (Town): population higher than 10,000, pop. density more than 3,000 per km², adequate income - or have the changwat administrative seat
    • Nakhon Municipality (City): More than 50,000 citizen, more than 3,000 citizen per km², adequate income
  • Sanitation District was the level below tambon, all 981 Sukapibans were elevated to Tambon by the Act Changing the Status of Sanitary District to Municipality, B.E. 2542, effective 24 February 1999 [5]

And more different tambon status: what is the Tambon Administrative Organization (Ongkarn Boriharn Suan Tambon = องค์การบริหารส่วนตำบล) and Supha Tambon (สภาตำบล)? andy 16:12, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Can't we have a Thai scholar to edit this page. Having foreigners who don't fully understand Thai local administrative system only make the incorrect article and lead to confusion. User:dhanakorn 02 May 2005

I have tried my very best to put only those parts into the article which seem to be clear, while leaving those confusing points in the notes above. Thus I think the article can't be that far from the facts, but incomplete for sure. Of course I'd love to see an expert clear up those confusing points, but so far sadly noone showed up. If you have anything to correct - be bold. andy 11:17, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Explaining

I am one of the Thai that knows the administrative of Thailand well. It's unlikely to the United States that you have the state but we have the province. However, เทศบาล and ตำบล are different. We oragnized like this:

and เทศบาล (English: municipality) is different from Tambon - anyway, I don't know for sure that you already have a synopsis or not, but I could give the information later if you want. --Passawuth (talk) 13:26, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

It's like this - Ongkarn Boriharn Suan Tambon or องค์การบริหารส่วนตำบล (อบต.) is the organization which look after Tambon. It's nothing to do with เทศบาล. --Passawuth (talk) 13:28, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Do you refer to the text posted at the top of this talk page, or to anything in the article itself. The one on top I had posted long time ago, when I did not know yet what thesaban actually are, but in the meantime I think I understood the difference between the two, and already made the article Thesaban and rewrote some part of this article. So maybe best would be that you check both this article and the one on thesaban (and sukhaphiban) if they contain any serious misconception. But the TAO (อบต.) does have some connection with thesaban, as newly created thesaban were previously TAOs. As you said you know the administrative system of Thailand well - may I invite you to read my blog? I often post things there which are not yet ready to be written into an article here. But sadly so far I did not get any feedback on the topics where I asked questions from someone who know better than me, who cannot read much Thai yet. andy (talk) 17:09, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Anyway, I will give you brief summary like this :

  • TAO or อบต. comes from องค์การบริหารส่วนตำบล which means "Tambon Organization" - each Tambon must have TAO. to look after each Tambon.

THIS IS IMPORTANT

  • Tesaban (เทศบาล) is one kind of องค์การบริหารส่วนท้องถิ่น - I don't know what to say in English.
  • Sukhaphiban (สุขาภิบาล) is smaller than Tesaban - is one kind of ราชการบริหารส่วนท้องถิ่น
Hope this will help you. If you needs some more information, I will put on my userpages and refers to Thai Administrative Website and the กระทรวงมหาดไทย site for if you can understand some using any Thai-English translator.
P.S. Next time talk to me in Deustch would be great ! I want to learn some - but am learning French. :D
P.S. (2) It's not like States in Deustchland such as Bavaria that you have own government and rules ! Thailand rules from the parliament, at Bangkok, from the capital - and divided into smaller administration - each province stills have the same rules which Deutsch people would hardly understand anyway. --Passawuth (talk) 14:29, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Don't miss-understand

  1. Thesaban and TAO are same level, they do all as same as each other do. the area controlling of Local Administration Organizations (องค์กรปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่น :- Thesaban /TAO /PAO /BMA /Pattaya City) is not a same type to the Regional Administration (ราชการส่วนภูมิภาค). That means you could not say "Nakhon Ratchasima is the capital of the Nakhon Ratchasima Province and Nakhon Ratchasima district" [6] because in fact capital of that province is amphoe mueang and capital of that amphoe is tambon Nai Mueang.
  2. Thesaban/TAO area is not exactly the same boundary to the "Regional" area. For example: Thesaban Tambon Mae Sai (เทศบาลตำบลแม่สาย) covers area which the first part come from a part of tambon Mae Sai (ตำบลแม่สาย) and the second part from a part of tambon Wiang Pang Kam (ตำบลเวียงพางคำ) and there are Mae Sai TAO (อบต.แม่สาย) and Wiang Pang Kam TAO (อบต.เวียงพางคำ) (now upgrade to Thesaban Tambon Wiang Pang Kam) control the remain areas of each tambon, this example says 2 Tambon hav 3 Local Admin Org., second exaple: City of Chiang Mai (Thesaban Nakhon Chiang Mai) that says one Local Admin Org. control 14 Tambol. That mean User:Passawuth could not says Tambon controlled by อบต. in the previous reply.
  3. for further informations, see also: Thailand_subdivisions on Mananaliksik's User Talk page (but i think i'm not update new PAO's duty) -- aIqCuEa 17:26, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. I already know that the thesaban boundaries not necessarily are the same as the one of the tambon, and that the local administration and the central administration are two different things in Thailand sharing tasks for the same areas. But if I am not totally wrong, the TAO usually cover a complete tambon, unless of course there is already some part of the tambon covered by a thesaban, of course. And some TAO are responsible for more than one neighboring tambon. The thesaban created recently were formerly TAO upgraded to a higher status with more responsibilities, so these now also control a full tambon. So I guess one can say that usually a TAO is responsible for a complete tambon. andy (talk) 19:42, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
