The series was a reboot of the Neverending Story series with the overall story exploring the origin story of Fantasia and Bastian from an even greater point of divergence from Michael Ende's novel than the motion pictures had been. Only a few very basic plot points of the original story have been left intact. Throughout the first half of the series there are two storylines occurring in tandem: Atreyu's adventures in Fantasia and Bastian's adventures in the real world. Various characters have also been altered, for example Xayide has become the Childlike Empress' sister, making them power equals. This enables her to become the main enemy to Bastian, Atreyu and all Fantasians over the span of the series.
