Takoma Academy began in 1904 as part of Washington Training Institute (now Columbia Union College). It became an independent institution in 1932 and moved to its current location at 8120 Carroll Avenue in 1952.
J. P. Laurence ("Prof") served as principal from 1947-1980 and transformed the school into a highly respected educational institution accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Dr. Laurence also served in Middle States Association for many years. He established an intermural athletics program which was one of the first within the Adventist church. The school gymnasium is named in honor of Dr. Laurence.

The school is one of 5,835 elementary, secondary, and higher educational institutions operated around the world by the Seventh-day Adventist church.
The physical plant includes a large chapel seating 585 students, one of the largest gymnasiums in the state, three well-equipped science rooms/laboratories, spacious classrooms, bookstore, cafeteria, music rehearsal hall, auto mechanics shop, and offices for the guidance counselor, alumni and student council.
The recreational facilities include complete locker rooms for men and women, an outdoor multipurpose playing field, and a 400-meter running track.
