[edit] Personality
Daughter of Einosuke Okuda, the Japanese translator of the original scripture "The Universe of the Four Gods". Takiko is a very serious character with a particular hatred of octopus and thunder. She is believed to be a stuck up by her classmates due to her naginata skills, of which she pays them no heed. She can be insecure at times.
Takiko was originally reluctant to become the Genbu no Miko because she doubted if she was really capable of doing so. However, when Takiko witnessed Tomite's mother getting hurt in protecting her, she decided to become the Priestess in order to protect Hokkan.
Eventually, Takiko fell in love with her first Celestial Warrior, Uruki, which they do not admit at first. Tomite, another of her warriors, had a slight inclination to Takiko in the beginning which leads to rivalry between him and Uruki. However, Tomite would come to accept Takiko's feelings for Uruki (though he took it rather grudgingly at first) and from then on he seems a lot less jealous of Uruki. Tomite's friendship with the priestess would remain strong even after his acceptance of Uruki and Takiko's relationship.
Takiko is very much respected by her celestial warriors (with the exception of the Urumiya twins), functioning as their backbone and their driving force to fight for a country that considers them a misfortune. Hatsui showed himself to Takiko first because she told him that he is an important person to the country, as opposed to Fen who kept him for two years without ever seeing his face. Namame's loyalties went to Takiko after the death of the Priestess Anru, and as a warrior born from the seimei stone, only through Takiko (with the help of Anru's necklace, which is made of the same stone as Namame) would he communicate his thoughts. Hikitsu seemed to show little desire to fulfill his duty as a seishi, but after Tomite convinces him to come with them, it became evident that Hikitsu likes protecting Takiko because "she resembles Aila, a little" as he tells Tomite, "When the miko called me 'Hikitsu', I had a feeling I could not go against her". Inami, like Hikitsu, refused to cooperate with Takiko at first, but she eventually conceded because she saw in Takiko a little bit of herself when she was younger. Some fans assume that Haagasu, the more outspoken half of Urumiya, would eventually shift to Takiko's side once his brother Tegu has been rescued, but as of the present he is one of the bitter enemies of his fellow seishi and their miko.
Takiko is also quite unaware of the effect she has on people; for example, she didn't realize Uruki was in love with her until after he tells her. Takiko is a sincere and honest person, but can be quite impulsive.
In recent chapters, she assumingly goes back to her world, after the other seishis lie to her in telling her that they do not need her. When she returns home, she meets an old acquaintance named Oikawa who is an assistant to the doctor that was taking care of Takiko's mother. Oikawa proposes to her, and Takiko first accepts to forget about the Genbu ordeal, but she is soon overcome by the fact that she cannot forget Rimudo, and cancels the marriage.
It is confirmed in Chapter 29 that Takiko is diagnosed with tuberculosis. In the original Fushigi Yuugi, when Miaka's brother and his friend investigated the author of the book, Einosuke Okuda, he found a report in the newspaper from Takiko's time that Einosuke killed Takiko then later killed himself too. After he went to Takiko's village and met Suzuno(the maiden byakko), he found out that Einosuke only killed his daughter only because Takiko was being eaten by Genbu.
A flashback sequence of Chapter 29 shows Rimudo talking to the other seishi before they plan to get Takiko back to her world: Taiitsukun has revealed to him that Takiko would be sacrificed once Genbu was summoned. In order to save her, the other seishis lied to her in telling her that they didn't need her. Takiko finds out the truth from her father, and discovers more of the prophecy that it did not direct towards the war with Kutou; rather, the predestined destruction of Hokkan.
Thus, in addition of learning the truth about her sacrifice, she becomes more determined to save the people of Hokkan and returns inside the book.
