Tajikistan first participated at the Olympic Games as an independent nation in 1996, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then. The nation has also competed at the Winter Olympic Games since 2002.
Previously, Tajik athletes competed as part of the Soviet Union at the Olympics until 1988, and after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Tajikistan was part of the Unified Team in 1992.
As of 2008, no athlete competing for Tajikistan has ever won an Olympic medal.
The National Olympic Committee for Tajikistan was created in 1992 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1993.
