Taiwan Sugar Corporation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Taiwan Sugar Corporation (台灣糖業公司) or Taisugar (台糖) is a state-run enterprise in Tainan City, Taiwan.

The corporation was created in 1946, following Taiwan's return to Chinese rule, by merging sugar industry assets that formerly belonged to Japanese companies or individuals. In the 1950s and 1960s, sugar was one of Taiwan's major exports; the corporation remains a major land owner.

Taiwan's sugar trade, which flourished for almost 400 years, is now a sunset industry, and the Taiwan Sugar Corporation has diversified into tourism, floriculture, biotechnology, and retailing. It also operates a chain of gas stations, and is an investor in the Taiwan High-Speed Rail.
