From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tahmoor is a town in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia, in Wollondilly Shire. It has a station on the Main Southern railway line served by CityRail's Southern Highlands services. It has a population of 4,339, including 120 (2.8%) indigenous persons and 3,494 (81.3%) Australian-born persons.[1]

[edit] History

Originally named Bargo South, it was a farming area on the old Hume Highway.

The new Main Southern Railway line was later established with a train station declared on the Southern Highlands rail line. This name was contested by a local businessman, who wished to establish a town called Bronzewing Park, but was rejected as the town was founded only slightly earlier by city rail as "Tahmoor", a local aboriginal term meaning "Bronzed Wing Pidgeon", a bird of common sight in the area.

Today Tahmoor is the unofficial centre of Wollondilly Shire, with new businesses drawn into the Wollondilly Shire area and establishing themselves in the business district in Tahmoor.

Tahmoor Rural Fire Brigade

The present day location of Tahmoor Rural Fire Brigade is opposite its original location on Thirlmere Way, near the Railway Hump. The station used to be an old hay shed, which was donated to the brigade. Brigade donations were used to upgrade the facility to accommodate the brigades needs. Tahmoor as the crime/drug capital of Wollondilly shire unfortunately must attend to numerous nuisance calls from residents for such occurrences as the commune bong has spilt and caused a HAZMAT incident,or the hydroponics setup has caught fire and burnt the house down,or just the general houso domestics that involve arson of any Government/public building. Rubbish bin fires are also used for heating during the winter months on the main street during the houso corroboree. At times when these incidents take place the Tahmoor members are paged but cannot attend the station due to the fact they are active participants with their families in the houso incidents. At these times Bargo Rural Fire Brigade must attend at great peril to their lives! Bargo has now been supplied with bullet proof vests for such calls. A Water Cannon, known as Bargo Cannon is currently on order. Rumours from council have Tahmoor Rural Fire Brigade being disbanded with members and the area given as Thirlmere and Bargo Rural Brigades area to service.[citation needed]
