[edit] Contradiction tag
Uh, removing the "contradiction" tag on article. Article appears fine, and there's nothing here in the Talk page to idicate the nature of the complaint. --NightMonkey 00:46, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
- I put the contradiction talk back in. The article has two different meanings for the word "Tagish", both from what I believe are reliable sources. Luigizanasi
- There are often two accounts as to the etymology of aboriginal placenames; another example in the area is Cassiar, which is supposed to be from a Kaska Dene word for a black bird. Or alternately, for asbestos ("fibrous rock")....but I've never found a Kaska Dene source to corroborate this except to repeat one or the other story, without an actual citation. Similarly Okanagan is supposedly from O-chee-pi-whatever, but in Teit's account of the Okanagan chiefs there used to be a redoubt in the Vernon area Oqaneken or something like that, where there was a rock fortress (a castle, no less) built by Nicola's father Pelka'mulox (who I've really got to get the bio done for) named Salixu which had to be abandoned because of perpetual attacks, which is how Nicola's people wound up where they are now (the Nicola Valley). Anyway, I'd say the way around this is to say there are different accounts of the etymology of the name; "one version says this, one says that". Similarly there are disputes as to the meaning of Lillooet, Spuzzum, Cowichan...esp. easy because of transliteration from aboriginal languages being inexact, so the original source-word may have become obscured by tradition, even if its proper etymology is (also) known.Skookum1 21:03, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

- The article doesn't contradict itself. The cited sources do, and there's nothing wrong with that. --Qyd 19:15, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
