Tagg's Island
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tagg's Island is an island in the River Thames in England on the reach above Molesey Lock, near East Molesey, Surrey. It just above Ash Island and close to the Surrey bank. There are several houses on the island and it is surrounded by houseboats, some of which are three stories high. The island is connected to the further Middlesex bank by a long single track road bridge.
It is named after Tom Tagg who hired out boats on the island and built a hotel there in 1873. The hotel was popular with London Society including Edward Prince of Wales. After World War I, Fred Karno who discovered Charlie Chaplin turned it into a music hall. The building was demolished and never rebuilt. The Astoria Houseboat, owned by Karno is a short way up the reach on the Middlesex Bank.
