Tachia River

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tachia River(Chinese:大甲溪pinyin: Dàjiǎ Xī; Literal meaning: "big shell river"; ) is a river in north-central Taiwan. It flows through Taichung County for 124km.[1] The sources of the Tachia are: Hsuehshan and Nanhu Mountain in the Central Mountain Range.[2] The Tachia flows through the Taichung county subdivisions (townships and cities) of Heping, Sinshe, Dongshih, Shihgang, Fengyuan, Houli, Shengang, Waipu, Dajia, Cingshuei and Da-an before emptying into the Taiwan Strait.[2]

The Techi Reservoir(Traditional Chinese: 德基水庫Simplified Chinese: 德基水库pinyin: Déjī Shuǐkù; Literal meaning: "virtuous foundation reservoir"; ) is a 592-square-kilometer reservoir on the Tachia.[3] The reservoir provides municipal water, generates hydroelectric power, is used for recreation and prevents flooding.[3]

Taiwan's Central Cross-Island Highway runs along the Tachia River from Heping to Dongshih. The Taichung Beltway begins in Fengyuan and follows the Tachia through into Cingshuei.

The Tachia experiences frequent earthflows during typhoons and heavy rain, damaging homes and breaking up roads, sometimes permanently.[citation needed]
