a) from name identify functional group present. (generally look at suffix (end of) name)

  example: ene (alkene)  oate (ester)  al (aldehyde)

b) draw core of functional group c) complete "straight" carbon chain(s) using the stem portion of the name, making sure the functional group is attached to the

  appropriate numbered carbon.

d) complete the valence of all carbon, oxygen and nitrogen atoms with the appropriate number of hydrogen.

bond polarity Although most bonds in organic molecules are classed as covalent bond, they range in character from strictly covalent ( C-C, C-H ) to polar bonds such as O-H where the electrons comprising the bond are not share equally between the bonded atoms, such that one of the bonded atoms carries a partial positive charge and the other a partial negative charge.

one measure of bond polarity is the difference in electronegativities of the bonded atoms. Electronegativity: a measure of the ability of a bonded atom to attract electrons to itself.
