Tabataba'i (nesbat)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tabataba'i was originally a nesbat, or title, that denoted that both the titled individual's mother and father were Seyyed, meaning direct descendents of Muhammad through Fatima (Muhammad's daughter) and Ali ibn Abi Talib, through their son Hasan ibn Ali who is the second imam of shi'as after his father.

This original usage of the term has lost meaning, however, as the title has been adopted over the century as a family name, and passed down to future generations even though if the mother's side were not Seyyed.

Origin of the word "taba-taba" appears to be Nabti meaning "master of masters".
