Dr. Thomas Baker was born in Scotland[citation needed]. After moving to Canada, he attended Central Collegiate Institute and graduated from Calgary Normal School in 1929. From 1929 to 1940 Tom Baker held teaching assignments in Evansburg, Millet, and Leduc.[citation needed].
Dr. Baker joined Edmonton Public Schools in 1940[citation needed]. . He taught at New Glenora School and was principal of Virginia Park and Queens Avenue. In 1955, he was appointed assistant superintendent and later that same year became deputy superintendent, a position he held until 1967 when he was appointed acting superintendent[citation needed]. . He retired from the district, after a distinguished career, in 1971.[citation needed].
Both fellow educators and the wider community have recognized Dr. Baker's leadership style and visionary ability[citation needed]. . He viewed everyone as unique and challenged them to excellence. In 1972, he was granted the first honorary lifetime membership awarded by the Public School Administrators' Associsation[citation needed]. . In 1974, he was honored with a lifetime membership to Alberta Teachers Association and an honorary doctorate degree from the university of Alberta.
Beyond the educational World, Dr. Baker's community efforts were recognized through the establishment of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre(Calgary) in 1981 and the presentation of the prestigious Sir Frederick Haultain Prize for his extensive contribution to the humanities.
The Board Of Trustees, the staff, students, parents, and the community of T.D. Baker School are proud to be associated with a such an outstanding individual. T.D. Baker Junior High school was built in 1991 and resembles the inside structure similar to the Grant Macewan University.[citation needed].
