[edit] The name
The municipality is named after Sykkylvsfjorden (Old Norse Síkiflir). The first element is sík n 'small lake; inlet' (referring to the lake, originally probably an inlet, of Fetvatnet). The last element (-iflir) is also found in the names Sunnylven and Vanylven, and the meaning is probably 'fjord'.
Until 1889 the name was written Søkelven, in the period 1889-1917 Søkkelven, from 1918 on Sykkylven.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1984). The figure represents the landscape of Sykkylvsfjorden.
[edit] Geography
Sykkylven is a part of the Sunnmøre region and is surrounded by the beautiful alpine mountain range Sunnmørsalpene. Most of the people in Sykkylven live by the fjord Sykkylvsfjorden, which again is connected to the fjord Storfjorden.
[edit] Economy
Sykkylven is well known for its furniture industry with companies such as Ekornes, Hjellegjerde, Brunstad, Hjelle and Cylindra.
