Syed Sheh Hassan Barakbah

Tun Tan Sri Syed Sheh Al-Haj bin Syed Hassan Barakbah SSM. PMN. DUPN. SPMK. PSB was the third Governor of Penang.

Born on November 10, 1906 in Alor Star, Kedah, Syed Sheh is of Arab-Malay descent. Being of the Barakbah clan, he is related to Sharifah Rodziah Syed Alwi Barakbah, the third wife of the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Syed received his education at the Sultan Abdul Hamid College before continuing his studies in England sponsored by the Kedah State Government's scholarship. He was accepted to read law at the Inner Temple. In 1934, he graduated with a LL.B. degree.

Tun Syed Sheh died on October 8, 1975, in Alor Star, Kedah.

  • April 1946: Special Magistrate.
  • 1948: President, Kedah Sessions Court in the Colonial Legal Service
  • October 1955 - June 1958: Judge, Seremban Court
  • 1962: Judge, Court of Appeal
  • 1963: Appointed Chief Judge of Malaya
  • June 1st 1966 - October 10th 1968: Appointed the first Malaysian Lord President of the Federal Court. Government Admistrative Officer, Penang
  • 1968: Appointed Senator in the Dewan Negara, the upper chamber of the Parliament
  • January 27, 1969: Appointed Yang di-Pertua Dewan Negara
  • February 1969 - February 1975: Appointed 3rd Governor of Penang by His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. He served two terms.

  • Darjah Yang Mulia Pangkuan Negara Seri Setia Mahkota (S.S.M.) which carries the title Tun by His Majesty DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong
  • Darjah Panglima Mangku Negara (PMN) which carries the title Tan Sri by His Majesty DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong
  • Darjah Utama Pangkuan Negeri (DUPN) first class from the Penang Government
  • Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Kedah (SPMK) first class from the Sultan of Kedah
  • Pingat Sultan Badlishah (PSB) from the Sultan of Kedah
