The Sydney Youth Orchestra (SYO), is one of Australia's premier youth orchestras and is the flagship orchestra of the Sydney Youth Orchestras family

Sydney Youth Orcehstras consists of eight different ensembles of varying standards. Many of the members of the SYO (the most senior orchestra) have climbed through the ranks of all the ensembles within the association, although it is not a requirement for entry.

In Sydney Youth Orchestras there are four junior ensembles with only strings:

  1. Speer Orchestra (40 strings)
  2. Camerata (40 strings, commencing 2008)
  3. Chamber Orchestra (40 Strings)
  4. Sinfonietta (40 strings)

Two more senior ensembles introduce wind and brass:

  1. Peter Seymour Orchestra (30 strings plus 2 flute, 2 oboe, 2 bassoon, 2 french horn)
  2. SYO Philharmonic (Symphony Orchestra with 75 total instruments)

There is also an ensemble specifically for a wide range of wind and brass instruments, the Symphonic Wind Orchestra (40 instruments including flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba and percussion).

The SYO itself consists of around 100 of the best musicians around Sydney.
