Swift Creek Middle School is a public school in Tallahassee, Florida, United States, and is a part of Leon County Schools.
[edit] SCHOOL PROFILE
Swift Creek Middle School, built in 1995 was the last middle school constructed in the eastern part of Leon County. The school sits atop American Indian burial grounds and has been the site of various excavations. SCMS is one of a limited number of middle schools in the state of Florida to earn an “A” ranking every year since the inception of the state accountability system. We were also the 04-05 recipient of the Enrollment Award by the Florida Music Educators Association. It is recognized that our band and chorus, which consistently earn superior ratings on assessments, are one of only two public schools in Florida with the largest combined enrollment in the state.
National and state measures of student performance indicate a strong commitment to student learning. Our student test scores remain above the district, state, and national levels. With the advent of school accountability mandated by the state legislature, Swift Creek Middle School has continued to maintain its tradition of academic excellence. The school is viewed as a model in how to achieve as a continually high performing school.
Swift Creek Middle School has a student population averaging between 980 and 1040 students annually. The student body comes from rural, urban and suburban communities. Demographics of the school mirror that of Leon County which indicate that 69 percent of the students are white; 25 percent are black; and 6 percent of our school are from other races. The school has a culturally diverse campus and those differences are respected and cherished.
The school has a highly qualified staff with a wealth of education, experience and loyalty. During the 2005-2006 school year, 38 percent of the faculty had ten or more years of instructional experience; 29 percent have more than four years experience; and over 35 percent of the faculty have advanced degrees (Masters, Specialist, and Doctorate degrees). Six members of the faculty have National Board certification and three are in the process of obtaining their certification. The faculty and staff are led by a strong, creative, flexible, and supportive administration.
To continue our efforts in assessing the school improvement process, a climate survey of parents, students, and teachers is conducted annually. This feedback, along with the Leon County Schools Data helps us gather information on the entire school community. The ratings for Swift Creek Middle School remain high among all stakeholders.
Swift Creek Middle School provides a highly challenging academic and extra-curricular program. The faculty is focused on meeting the needs of the students and makes every effort to have Swift Creek Middle School become a place of opportunities. Parents, along with the staff, have a highly valued input into the decisions that impact the school. The administration of Swift Creek Middle School is proactive and supportive to the mission, goals, and beliefs of the school. The total school community provides the amazing tradition of excellence at Swift Creek Middle School.
