Sweden debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1958. They had, however broadcast it already in 1957. The years 1964, 1970 and 1976 they did not participate, so Sweden has partipicated 47 times. The Swedish representant is since 1999 picked by a 50-50 mix of televoting and expert juries in the national selection broadcast by SVT, named Melodifestivalen. It is the most popular TV show in Sweden and 46% of the population watched it in 2006. The Eurovision Song Contest in 1983 was seen by 70% of the population, while in 2006 80% of the viewing audience that night watched the Eurovision.
Their first win was in 1974 when ABBA won with "Waterloo", which became their international breakthrough. Ten years later, in 1984, The Herrey Brothers won with "Diggiloo-Diggiley". In 1991, Carola won with the song "Fångad av en stormvind", and the latest victory was in 1999 with "Take me to your heaven" sung by Charlotte Nilsson. But they have also finished last twice; in 1963, they even got the infamous "nul points". Ironically, the singer who did so, Monica Zetterlund went on to become the country's most popular jazz singer. Since singing in any language became possible in 1999, Sweden is one of the few countries to since having never sung in its national language, instead chosing to sing in English each year.
Sweden is generally considered to take the Eurovision very seriously indeed, and this is reflected in their consistently good results. They have scored 2,846 points (as of 2007) over the years, this is the third highest amount. Unlike other traditionally successful Eurovision countries, such as United Kingdom and France, they haven't had repeating fiasco results during the 21st century, but managed to take four Top 5-results these years. In the 2007 edition, however, they finished 18th. SVT received a record of 3 489 public entries to choose from for the 2007 edition of Melodifestivalen. On March 15th Charlotte Perrelli (formerly Nilsson, the 1999 ESC winner with "Take me to your heaven") was again chosen to represent Sweden, this time with the song "Hero". The results were disappointing, as Charlotte also finished 18th. Sweden will however compete again in 2009.
On October 22, 2005, in the celebration The 50th Anniversary Contest Congratulations, "Waterloo" by ABBA was selected as the best Eurovision song of all time. A total of 31 countries voted.
Sweden was one of the five first countries to adapt televoting in 1997. Televoting had already been used in the Swedish national final in 1993.
Several singers besides Charlotte Perrelli have represented Sweden twice. Two singers, Carola Häggkvist and Marie Bergman has represented Sweden three times, Marie Bergman as a group member in 1971 and 1972 and with Roger Pontare in 1994. Carola partipicated in 1983, 1991 and 2006, and has never finished outside top five. In the 2008 pre-selections Carola's duet "One Love" with Andreas Johnson however surprisingly failed to qualify for the Swedish Melodifestivalen final.

Note: This table only includes the finals, and not the Semi-Finals since 2004.
On average score however, Estonia has awarded Sweden highest points per year. They debuted in 1994 and has since given Sweden an average of 6.67 points per year. Sweden has also frequently given Estonia high points (average 6.63 a year, semifinals excluded). Sweden usually also gives notably high points to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Turkey, possibly due to the high number of immigrants from these countries in Sweden. It is worthy of note that at the 2007 contest, the only countries to award Sweden any points, expcept the other Scandinavian participants, were the United Kingdom and Andorra.
