For the Eurovision Song Contest 1999, Sweden held a national final (Melodifestivalen 1999). It was held on February 27 in Stockholm, and was hosted by Anders Lundin - who would host the 2000 Contest - and Vendela Thommessen. There were 10 songs in the final, with the winning song chosen by both regional juries and televoting (both sets being worth 50% of the points). Winner was the typical dansband song Tusen och en natt, performed by Charlotte Nilsson (now Perrelli) and written by Gert Langstrand and Lars "Dille" Diedricsson. It got the highest number of points from both the 11 juries and the televoters.
For the ESC, the song was translated into English by Marcos Ubeda, which the rules allowed for the first time since 1977. Charlotte sung in the 15th spot (the total number of competors was 23). In the voting, Sweden entered a top battle with Iceland and Germany, but when only one jury remained, Sweden had taken their 4th victory and their second in the 1990's. The total number of points was 163.
