Sweden chose their song and performer for the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 by holding a broadcast selection, Melodifestivalen 1997. 12 out of 1 229 submitted songs were performed in a final, and winner was the song Bara hon älskar mig (If only she loves me). It was written and composed by Stefan Berg and sung by the group Blond.
Sweden was drawn to perform #16 in the grand European final. They did not receive as many points as in the recent years, only 36, resulting in a disappointing 14th place. Thanks to the high scores of the four previous years, however, Sweden qualified for the 1998 contest as well.
