Sweden selected their entry for ESC 1996 by holding a national preselection, Melodifestivalen 1996. Of the 10 songs (5 in a second round), Den vilda, performed by One More Time, won a runaway victory. It was written by the group members Peter Grönvall and his wife Nanne.
The final was this year held in neighbouring Norway, and the group was drawn to perform as 23rd, therefor closing the start field. Despite a slow start in the voting, and though only receiving one twelve (from the eventual winner Ireland, Sweden ended up 3rd with 100 points, excactly the same position and number of points that Jan Johansen had given the country the year before. However, in the non-broadcast pre-qualifying round, Sweden was the winner with 227 points.
