SwapThing is the ultimate swap meet, garage sale, flea market, barter arena, and trade exchange. Swap the things you want for the things you need, or choose to purchase the things users are selling. There is no cost for registration and listings, and a low fee for completed transactions. Users simply create a directory of items and services they are offering and seeking, and browse the database for treasured finds. No matter where your interests lie, there’s plenty to discover amongst the 20 categories at SwapThing.

SwapThing is a group of dedicated swappers who wanted an easier way to get things without parting with their beloved greenbacks. The idea was born when a sick kitty and lack of funds necessitated a swap deal with an accounting-challenged veterinarian. The idea for the company was formed in a San Francisco Bay Area brewery and came to life over years of hard work from the SwapThing team. The site was created with fun in mind and a desire to make swapping transactions easy for everyone.

SwapThing wanted to help those less fortunate and created the ShareThing Nonprofit Program. ShareThing was designed to make it easier for nonprofit organizations to raise awareness and gain support in their local communities. With the SwapThing system, organizations simply create a wish list of items and services needed for users to browse and discover what they can donate to help others. Donor items and cash donations are exchanged for a printable copy of the completed transaction, to be used as a tax-deductible receipt.

In October 2005, SwapThing rolled out its official version of the site. Content-rich spotlight pages were introduced for each item category, which includes featured items and articles. The Profile View page allows users to manage the items they are listing, monitor swap offers and questions, and customize the information about themselves that they wish to share with other swappers.

The new version of SwapThing also brought about the addition of SwapCircles. SwapCircles provide a new way to swap goods and services amongst trusted swappers with similar interests. Users can create a SwapCircle of like-minded swappers, forming a community within which they can communicate and conduct swap transactions. Those already part of a community can add swap functionality by creating a SwapCircle and integrating it with their existing community.

SwapThing was originally available only to users in the United States and Canada, but has since expanded its reach around the globe. Along with the addition of 29 more countries, including New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and the European Union nations, the SwapThing Advanced Search function can produce results by zip codes and country codes.

If you have not created the image yourself then you need to indicate why we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies under Wikipedia's fair use guidelines, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. If you want the image to be deleted, tag it as {{db-unksource}}.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
