Swayze, Indiana

Swayzee is a town in Grant County, Indiana, United States. The town's motto is "The only Swayzee in the world" based on a story about a postcard sent by a serviceman overseas during World War II. Although it was addressed only to "Swayzee" with no mention of Indiana or any other information, it was said to have been delivered.

Swayzee is located at 40°30′24″N, 85°46′26″W (40.50667, -85.77389)[1]. It is located in Sims Township, Grant County, Indiana.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.47 square miles (1.18 km²). The population density is 2 141.5 people per square mile.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1011 people, 404 households, and 310 families residing in the town. The population density was 929.2 people per square mile (356.9/km²). There were 371 housing units at an average density of 380.5/sq mi (146.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.97% White, 0.39% African American, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 0.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.48% of the population.

There were 357 households out of which 43.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% were married couples living together, 56.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% were non-families. 21.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.41% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.89. 88.3% of families lived in the home they owned, while 11.7% were renters.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.5 years. For every 100 females there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males.

In 1997 there were 2 manufacturers, 5 retail trade, 5 food services, and one health care establishment employing 43-60 individuals.

Swayzee, Indiana is located on State Road 13 west of the city of Marion and north of US 35 / State Road 22 coming east from the city of Kokomo. Although most of the town is either houses or cornfields, there are many other features to this small, quiet town.

Although Swazyee is a small town, businesses continue to do well. Besides a gas station, funeral home, medical clinic, hardware store(Closed Now) and realtor, Swayzee is home to Harper Garden Implements, a John Deere Dealership and Farm Implement Store, and repair shop. Swayzee also has its own telephone company, internet service provider and a branch bank.

Swayzee is part of the Oak Hill United School District and home to the Swayzee Elementary School, The Only Four Star Elementary School in the County. It is home to churches of three different denominations of Christianity; United Methodist, Nazarene, and United Church of Christ.
