[edit] Plot
The film starts with Mammootty shown living like a recluse near a famous temple. When he ventures out to a farm he is beaten by the farmers thinking he has come to steal the goats. When they hand him over to the police the officer identifies him to be Anantha Sharma; who was a great musician( Sangeeta Samrat-Emperor of music) and who used to live in his native village. He was missing for four years. He informs his aunt (who lives in that village) of this fact. The past of Anantha Sharma is now told through flashback.
Anantha Sharma was widely respected by all as a great Carnatic singer; but he has one bad quality-ego; of which only his wife(Radhika) knows. So much that when the Government of India awards him a Padma Sri (the fourth highest civilian award in India) he rejects it as he is given this award along with some other singers whom he considers to be not as great as him! There in the same village lives a boy called Gangadhar (Master Manjunath) who bunks music classes and school to sit by the riverside. The river inspires him to sing many songs in different tunes. Hence he is liked by the music teacher who is the policeman's aunt. He is also liked by the school teacher (the Music teacher's brother).
Gangadhar wants to become a great singer like Anantha Sharma and his father(Dharmavarupu Subrahmanyam) too expects the same from his son. His day comes when Anantha Sharma was honoured in an auditorium. Gangadhar sings a song ("Aa Nathi Neeyara") in honour of Anantha Sharma which many considered to be much better than any of Anantha Sharma's four decades of work! The boy is hailed as a child prodigy by one and all including the music teacher's wife. She who feels sad because she does not have a child. Anantha Sharma wants to imprison Gangadhar's talents. So he asks Gangadhar to stay in his house and learn music as one must be well-experienced to sing on stage. He goes to the extent of copying one of his tunes and he sings it on stage to get back his lost glory! But Gangadhara and Anantha's wife comes to know of it. He now feels guilty and shouts that he has done it as he was afraid this child will destroy his name andfame etc. In this emotional moment he suffers a heart-attack. To satisfy his adopted mother (Radhika) Gangadhar kills himself. For this will mean there will be no challenge to Anantha Sharma's title of Sangeet Samrat. But this comes as a rude shock to Anantha Sharma as people will call him a murderer. To escape this public anger and insult he runs away like a recluse.(Flashback ends.)
Anantha Sharma fell unconscious while in police station. When he wakes up he finds himself in the house of Gangadhar's music teacher. The elder brother of music teacher tells him that they have forgiven him and asks him to go back to his house. There he finds his wife(Radhika) conducting music classes in his house (Institute named as Gangadhar Music Academy.) He will sit down and humbly learn the basics of music from his wife along with other mainly child students. His humility means he does not mind taking a piece of advice given by a young girl on how to sing.
