Swanston, Edinburgh
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Swanston is an area of Edinburgh, Scotland. It is a small village and residential district, lying in the larger area of Fairmilehead, just south of the Edinburgh City Bypass and five miles from the city centre. Swanston is found near the Pentland Hills. The Hillend dry ski slope is nearby and can be seen from much of the area.
Robert Louis Stevenson spent several summers there in the 1870s, and set his novel St. Ives in the village. His house, a white cottage, can be seen on the Pentland Hills to this day.[citation needed]
The name "Swanston" is said to derive from Sweyn's Town, after an unrecorded Norseman.[citation needed]
