Swansea Cork Ferries

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Swansea Cork Ferries Limited, is an Irish-based company owned by an Irish business consortium headed by Briar Star Ltd. They have only one route, sailing between Swansea, Wales and Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork in Ireland.

The ferry operates all year round and the ten hour journey is usually covered by an overnight sailing arriving in Ireland early in the morning, sailing back to Wales during the day time, arriving early evening.

There is only one ferry operating this service and can accommodate cars, camper vans and has rooms on board for all travellers.

After selling their most recent vessel due to capacity issues, and the inability to purchase a new vessel, it was announced through the local press that the company will not be operating a service during the 2007 summer season.

Update - April 2008 As of April 2008 the service is still not running - and there has been no statement from the company as to their intentions. Meanwhile, the tourism business in the south-west of Ireland is suffering as some visitors who would have travelled to Ireland by the Swansea-Cork ferry are unprepared to take the alternative Fishguard-Rosslare route - which involves (at least) another four hours driving through Ireland to reach Cork.

Local businesses have started a Campaign website to highlight the impact caused by the continuing lack of the Ferry service - www.bringbacktheswanseacorkferry.com

West Cork & Kerry are still open for business - it's well worth the extra effort to visit us - but it would be great if the ferry service could be restored.... soon!
