Swanmore College of Technology is a large school for secondary education, taking pupils from year 7 to year 11. The school is situated in the village of Swanmore, Hampshire, and was previously known as Swanmore Secondary School.

The institution gained Specialist Technology College status a few years ago. As part of this, pupils are required to take at least one technology subject (Food Technology, Resistant Materials, Electronics, Graphical Design, Product Deisgn or Textiles.) to GCSE level in Key Stage 4.

[edit] Facilities

Sports facilities include an outdoor pool, tennis courts, several fields, a refurbished sports hall and a new shared school/community centre with a dance studio and floodlit sport court. The school teaches three modern languages: French, Spanish and German. However, in January 2008, the outdoor pool was closed for health and safety reasons - and that refurbishing the pool to meet up to new health and safety standards would be too expensive.

[edit] New tutor group system

In 2006 at the start of the academic year, the school had a radical redesign of its tutor group system; originally a pupil would be placed in a tutor group with peers that were only in his or her year group. Now, a pupil will be placed in a tutor group consisting of people of different year groups but of the same house. The exception to this is in Year 7 where pupils are still placed in tutor groups consisting of pupils in Year 7 only. However pupils are still with peers of their own age for teaching.

The advantages of this system are that younger pupils can gain advise about schoolwork and homework from older pupils more easily. It has also resulted in a more defined school house system, with house points now in place.
