[edit] Welcome!

Hi Svenska84, and a warm welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you have enjoyed editing as much as I did so far and decide to stay. Unfamiliar with the features and workings of Wikipedia? Don't fret! Be Bold! Here's some good links for your reference and that'll get you started in no time!

Most Wikipedians would prefer to just work on articles of their own interest. But if you have some free time to spare, here are some open tasks that you may want to help out :

  • RC Patrol - Keeping a lookout for vandalism.
  • Cleanup - Help make unreadable articles readable.
  • Requests - Wanted on WP, but hasn't been created.
  • Merge - Combining duplicate articles into one.
  • Wikiprojects - So many to join, so many to choose from...Take your pick!

Oh yes, don't forget to sign when you write on talk pages, simply type four tildes, like this: ~~~~. This will automatically add your name and the time after your comments. And finally, if you have any questions or doubts, don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page. Once again, welcome! =)

[edit] California English

This article has gone through the Votes for Deletion phase already and the consensus was to delete it. Please stop creating VFD'd articles, that is considered vandalism. RickK 21:10, Mar 19, 2005 (UTC)

California English was my first wikipedia article, and after going through some of the various rules listed on Wikipedia I don't understand what the problem was with the article or why it was considered vandalism. As far as I was aware there was nothing objectionable to the content and format, unless someone came in and vandalized it. What are VFD articles? Votes for Deletion articles? And how can you "create VFD" articles--why would I intend to create an article destined for deletion? I'm sorry, I'm still not familiar with all the processes involved with wikipedia but would like to learn more so the article may be restored in a modified format which hopefully doesn't break with policy or incorporate vandalism into its text. Can anyone help? user svenska84.

You can sign your posts with four tildes - ~~~~. A previous article with this same name was considered "original research", which is not an acceptable usage of Wikipedia. It was listed on the Votes for deletion page, and, following 5 days of discussion, the consensus was to delete the article. The article was then recreated yesterday and immediately deleted as a violation of the consensus of Wikipedia editors. You recreated it, and I redeleted it, and posted the message above. Do you have any refrences to "prove" your contentions which you included in this article? Other than personal knowledge? RickK 00:22, Mar 20, 2005 (UTC)

I am not aware of a previous article on that subject. In fact, I had searched for a page on it several times in the past, and wikipedia had always reported that no page had yet been created on it. I spent some time writing up an article for California English based off of several sources (it is not my research, but information backed up by numerous findings, and in the article I did mention scholars such as Penelope Eckert of Stanford who have contributed significantly to the scholarly research of the topic). I posted the article for the first time on Friday the 18th (I had just written it that day on my computer so any resemblence to any previous article must be superficial as I didn't copy and paste and wasn't part of any previous article). I'm sorry I reposted the page--I wasn't aware it had been deleted on purpose--I thought I must have missed something in terms of the correct procedure for loading pages to wikipedia. I'm sorry if I caused any problems, as I said before I am a new wikipedia user and was trying my best to model the article in the same format as the American English article. I still have a hard copy of the article on my computer, so I was wondering what exactly I should do to make it acceptable for wikipedia usage policy. Do I need to cite often? I noticed that on the American English article (which seemed scholarly and reputable) very little is specifically cited, such as detailed descriptions of phonological and grammatical processes, so on Friday I figured at least posting my article and mentioning at least a couple of sources would be fine in the meantime before I figured out how to correctly cite. Anyway, I would appreciate any suggestions concerning the exact steps I need to take in order to make this article fit acceptable wikipedia usage policy. Would it be all right if I repost the article and figure out how to fit in citations? Thanks so much for your help! Svenska84 08:31, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I'd just like to say good job on the California English article. The previous article under that title was deleted through VfD because it was full of garbage. — J3ff 01:09, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The citation on articles isn't consistent on Wikipedia; Wikipedia articles should contain citations though. It is better to have some citations rather than no citations. — J3ff 01:20, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Your ears must be burning. We may need your help here.

[edit] Image Tagging Image:THSpic.jpeg

Thanks for uploading Image:THSpic.jpeg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag, so its copyright status is therefore unclear. Please add a tag to let us know its copyright status. (If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know on the image description page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Otherwise, see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. Thanks so much. --Michael 04:09, August 27, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Turlocksbucksplaza.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, ie in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}.) See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you created this/these image(s) yourself, you can use the {{PD-self}} tag. Thank you. Also these other images:

[edit] California English images

Hi, thanks for all your good work at California English. Two images there, Image:Cavowelshift.jpeg and Image:Californiavowelshift2.jpg need information on their source and their copyright status (copyrighted but used under fair use; created by you and released into the public domain; created by you and released under the GFDL; etc.). --Angr (tɔk) 09:01, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! I'm unsure about those images' copyright statuses but I included the links for where they were originally found so that may be verified by someone who knows how to do that. Svenska84 09:18, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Since they're both taken directly from other websites, they're almost certainly copyrighted. (http://www.pbs.org/speak/ahead/change/changin/ even has a copyright notice at the bottom.) However, since they serve to illustrate the phenomenon discussed on the page they probably fall under fair use, so I'll mark them as such. Still, once I get a chance I may make a new image of my own to use on this page, if only because neither of these uses IPA symbols. --Angr (tɔk) 09:23, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Thanks so much for checking on those. And about making images on your own, that would be great--your IPA vowel plot really contributed to the article. Svenska84 09:26, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Okay, I've made a new image of the California vowel shift and nominated the two others for deletion, because it's against Wikipedia policy to keep copyrighted images around once they're not used in an article anymore. --Angr (tɔk) 21:58, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Perfect! that looks great. Thanks for doing that. I'm curious--what program do you use to draw up those vowel plots? Svenska84 22:05, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Microsoft Paint. I downloaded the vowel chart from Sindhi language and used that a basis. --Angr (tɔk) 09:16, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
