It's very interesting why article was renamed Svete River. Usually names of non-English small places are written in local language. So, it should be Švėtė River or Svēte river. Hugo.arg (talk) 12:22, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

In this case when there are multiple names it is preferred to use the English version since that usually is what English speaking people are looking for. (see also WP:UE) Philaweb T 13:02, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
There is no English name for the river. It has Lithuanian and Latvian names, and dropping diacritics does not make it "English". So the proper name should be either Švėtė or Svēte. My suggestion is look where the river is the longest and chose that name. Renata (talk) 14:58, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
You are right, there is no English name for the river. I mentioned an English version – without the diacritics, that is what English speaking people with English QWERTY keyboards would be typing into the search field. Naming an article about a river on the basis on what country it has the longest part would change many things. Daugava River would then become Dvina River etc. Edit: And what about Nemunėlis or Mēmele that constitutes the border of Lithuania and Latvia for a length. Philaweb T 16:29, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
...That's why Wikipedia has redirects - and they are cheap :) To go by length is just a suggestion, not a policy by any means. If you have a better solution, I would love to hear it. Renata (talk) 16:38, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
