Sven Vollfied (スヴェン=ボルフィード Suven Borufīdo) is one of the four main protagonists in the anime and manga versions of Black Cat. He is a sweeper and Train's partner, and he befriends Eve and treats her like a person instead of a weapon. He, Eve and Train work together. He has an eye that can see several seconds into the future, but it puts a strain on him. He has a good eye for details, noticing Rinslet's gun and wig when he first meets her. He never leaves a woman in need.

[edit] Sven Vollfied in the Manga
Sven is a veteran sweeper, who takes the role of a mature figure in the manga. He follows a strict "gentlemen" code; he is always respectful to women and children and acts very proper. He is often tortured by Train's capricious personality and is usually dragged into trouble (and debt) because of it. He also has quite a close relationship with Eve.
Sven is also skilled in inventing and making innovative weapons and other various equipment. This includes bombs and special bullets for Train. Sven's weapon of choice was originally a normal pistol, but after that was destroyed, he invented a suitcase equipped with hidden weaponry inside of it. He occasionally uses his eye of foresight, which is usually covered by his black eyepatch. It allows him to see a few seconds in the future and proves convenient sometimes, however, it drains much of his physical energy.
In the past, Sven was originally an IBI (International Bureau of Investigation) detective. His partner and friend was Lloyd Goldwyn, who had the ability of clairvoyance. Lloyd died saving Sven from a gang of drug dealers, as it was Lloyd's daughter's birthday and Sven tried to go alone, but Lloyd foresaw Sven's danger and showed up to save him, getting shot in the process. Before he died, Lloyd donated his right eye to Sven, whose eye was ruined by being hit with a wrench. This is how Sven received his foresight ability, called Vision Eye.
The Vision Eye allows Sven to see a time range from seconds to minutes in the future, and consumes much energy, making Sven have to rest every time he uses it. On the final part of the manga, right before the attack on Clarken Island, Sven develops his Vision Eye into a new skill, not related to Lloyd, but belonging to his pure personal vision of things, which is Grasper Eye. This ability not only lets Sven use it during more time, and consuming less energy, but also means a great change: Sven can effectively use it for combat, allowing his body to react to dangerous events without thinking about it, such as dodging bullets from a Gatling gun for a prolonged period of time with ease.
[edit] Sven Vollfied in the Anime
Likewise with Train, Sven's backstory remained more or less the same. However he appears to be the main comedic relief in the Anime. Also, Sven never went through intensive training before the assault on Clarken Island, and as such his Vision Eye never became the Grasper Eye. Sven is also many times referred to as "old man", even though he's only 24. This might be a result from his attitude of a gentleman which practically turns him into the most careful of the show's characters. Sven, together with Train, saves Eve, and in the end he decides to raise Eve like his "daughter". When Eve asks Sven if he's going to look for Train, he replies that he doesn't need to, as he's a stray cat, and they'll eventually meet.
The comic relief treatment given to Sven may be a nod to Fujiwara's tendency to voice comic roles, e.g. Maes Hughes in Full Metal Alchemist and Reno in Advent Children.
