The Suzuki GSX1400, is a sports tourer motorcycle introduced by Suzuki in 2001. It has a 1402 cc inline-4 engine.
[edit] Model History [1]
2002 Suzuki year code: K2.
Suzuki's muscle bike number one, the GSX1400, was not aimed for the Western market at first. It is actually still not available in the Northern America. At first, Suzuki announced that the model was available in Japan only, with the power restricted to 100 bhp and the speedo meter showed maximum 180 km/h. The model was introduced to the Japanese market in March 2001 as K1, 2001-year's model.
However, this cannot be entirely true. By the time the news of this beautiful and potent motorcycle arrived to Europe Suzuki had already began building bikes for European market without the power restriction. The International sales brochure was printed in April 2001 and the first bikes arrived to shops in Europe in June 2001. The bikes looked the same as the Japanese K1 models but the brochures said it was a 2002-year's K2 model
Confusing? It isn't the first time Suzuki sells a model to Japanese market a year before it is released in Western world but this time the models were introduced almost simultaneously. Yes, it's confusing when the Japanese K1 model looks like the European K2 model. But I have decided not to label the model version as both 2001 and 2002 and so on. I will tell the model history like the Japanese we-want-to-try-them-out-first models didn't exist. I just mention that they do.
The GSX1400 is a perfect compromise between the 1980's muscle bikes and the hi-tech of the new millennium. The engine has more in common with bikes like the GSX-R1000 than the 1980 GSX1100E. On the surface, it looks like an old-fashioned muscle bike engine but the carburetors have been swapped to an electrical fuel injection and a number of sensors make sure that everything works like it should. Also, the frame with a twin shocker rear swing looks like a standard vintage bike frame but the suspension, the brakes (similar to the brakes for the TL1000R and GSX-R1000) are all high class. There's a separate page on this site telling more about the specifications of the bike.

There was no need to make any significant improvements for an already potent motorcycle for the second model year. New paint job was the only change for the 2003-year's GSX1400. The new graphics were introduced for the Japanese market as early as in October 2001 on the Tokyo Motor Show and the Suzuki Official Web Site in Japan made the new colors official in March 2002. The Japanese domestic K2version looked like the Western world's K3, you might say.
The Red suspension springs you see on the Silver Metallic GSX1400 were not available outside Japan. For some reason all the GSX1400 offered on the Japanese home market had Red rear shocker springs.
The Blue-White model had still White-coated wheels that makes the bike look lighter and more gracious (a matter of opinion) but are difficult to keep clean (a fact).

The third version of the GSX1400 has again only been modified on the surface. New graphics on the fuel tank and the tail, Black coated wheels.
Suzuki has also introduced a special model, GSX1400 Data, introduced on the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2003. The GSX1400 Data uses a computer controlled suspension that registers all the suspension movements on a data chip (like a GP racer) and saves the info on a chip built in the starter key. My guess is that the rest of the bike's specifications were exactly or just about the same as for the standard model. Differences spotted on the picture: wind screen, the paint scheme, polished wheel sides, smaller side panel, Gold coated front forks.
I don't know if the model was a concept bike, made for the Tokyo Motor Show only, or if it was available in the shops.
As before, the Red suspension springs you can see on the bikes below were not available outside Japan. The GSX1400's sold in Japan had Red rear shocker springs.

2005 Suzuki year code: K5.
The 2005-year's version of the GSX1400 has not only been modified on the surface. The most obvious difference that was easy to spot was the new exhaust system, revisited from classic twin 4-2-2 to single (but longer) 4-2-1 pipe with a stainless steel silencer. The loss of the left muffler reduced the weight of the bike by 3 kg (6.6 lb) but also lowered the torque by 2 Nm.
The fuel injection system was revisited for a better fuel intake (better acceleartion) at the lower speed range as was the automatic fast idle system. An internally coded ignition key was added as an immobilizer system and the aluminum cylinder walls were coated with something called Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SMEC). The front brake lever had now 5-step adjustment (previously 6-step). Luminous meter needles.
The Suzuki logo was changed to a single "S", as with all the other (except Hayabusa) Suzuki models for 2005.
The Red suspension springs you were not standard even outside Japan. An all-black version was now available in Europe. As it had Black wheels and Red shocker spring, the Japanese GSX1400Z special model had Gold wheels, Black engine, Black headlight, Black Chrome exhaust and Black shocker coil springs.

2006-year's model version of the GSX1400 was, not surprisingly, very similar to the earlier models. You have to look for details to spot the difference between a K5 and a K6. The fuel tank graphics were slightly changed and for the Blue-White, the tail plastics had more Blue than earlier.
Is this the last model year for the GSX1400? For some countries it is. Suzuki UK just announced (in May 2006) that because of the Euro III emissions regulations coming into force at the end of 2006, the 2006-year's model of the GSX1400 will be Suzuki’s last traditional muscle bike for the UK market. GSX1400 celebrates its last year of production for the UK market with a special model, the GSX1400 Final Edition, available from authorized Suzuki dealers in UK. Although featuring a Yoshimura dual cone exhaust system and a limited edition graphic these machines the GSX1400FE can be bought at the standard retail price.
Does the new emission regulations ban the model from the entire European market? http://www.suzukicycles.org/photos/GSX/GSX1400/2006_GSX1400_blwhsne_250.jpg http://www.suzukicycles.org/photos/GSX/GSX1400/2006_GSX1400_blwhside_250.jpg http://www.suzukicycles.org/photos/GSX/GSX1400/2006_GSX1400_Yoshimura_250.jpg
